Popular Beliefs, Myths, and Icons.

It seems like you can’t flip through the channels without a reality show airing these days. Reality television or reality shows is a big craze in popular culture, however it has been around since 1948 when Candid Camera debuted. Reality TV can range from games shows to shows about ordinary people who want to become famous to celebrities who want to be portrayed as ordinary people.

Most reality shows are not scripted and the participants tend to put on a show or over react when the camera is on them. Personally I feel that some of these reality shows are beginning to get out of hand so the producers can keep it interesting. There seems to be a great deal of controversy as to whether or not reality television really reflects reality as most of them are based on competition or some other unusual situation.

In the 1990’s when reality TV shows started to become popular with shows like “The Real World”, and “Big Brother” they didn’t seem as staged and there didn’t seem to be a whole lot of partying. Now when you watch shows like “Jersey Shore” that is all they do, which to me seems unrealistic. I think some reality shows are there to create stereotypes of people like “Keeping up with the Kardashians” and “Basketball Wives”, while other shows like America’s Funniest Videos make us laugh and shows such as “Wheel of Fortune” and “Millionaire” can give us knowledge.
